Poor Connectivity Threatens Nigeria's 2027 Elections

On 12 September 2026, at the Nigeria eGovernment Summit in Lagos, technology and telecommunications stakeholders expressed concerns that poor connectivity, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, misinformation, and inadequate digital infrastructure could jeopardize the credibility of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. The summit, themed “Mainstreaming Technologies in Nigeria Election Management,” aimed to discuss how technology can enhance the electoral process.

Lanre Ajayi, Chairman of the Nigeria eGovernment Summit, stated that Nigeria must transition from pilot projects to a fully integrated electoral system that instills public trust. He highlighted the importance of biometric voter registration, voter authentication, and electronic result transmission, while warning that existing infrastructure gaps and low digital literacy could threaten confidence in the electoral process.

Kunle Olorudare, President of the Internet Society, Nigeria Chapter, represented by Gbemisola Esho, identified technology resilience, digital rights, and information integrity as essential for credible elections.
