Akwa Ibom Celebrates 27 Years of Aviation Development

The arrival of a new Airbus A220-300 at Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo marks a significant milestone in Akwa Ibom State's aviation development, representing 27 years of continuous policy execution across four governors. This initiative began in 1999 when Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, Victor Attah, and Senator Udoma Udo Udoma conceptualized the state's aviation strategy during a trip to Houston, Texas.

Despite facing opposition from the federal government, particularly from President Olusegun Obasanjo, who suggested that state funds should support federal infrastructure instead, the project persisted. Arc. Victor Attah, as governor, laid the foundation stone for the airport, establishing a vision that subsequent governors have followed.

Today, Akwa Ibom's aviation strategy includes a state-owned airline, a world-class international terminal, a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) complex, and a focus on developing local human capital, making it West Africa's most integrated aviation ecosystem.
