Major Shakeup in Nigeria Police Following Egbetokun's Dismissal

Following the removal of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun by President Bola Tinubu, at least 29 senior police officers, including Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs), are expected to be dismissed. This decision is part of a broader restructuring of the Nigeria Police Force, as disclosed by sources within the police service.

Egbetokun's tenure was marked by controversy, particularly regarding his prolonged stay in office beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60, which was facilitated by amendments to the Police Act allowing for a fixed four-year term for the Inspector General. The anticipated changes aim to realign the police hierarchy and address perceived favoritism within the force.

Tunji Disu, the current Assistant Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, is expected to succeed Egbetokun. The situation has drawn criticism from civil society groups and opposition voices regarding the implications for institutional discipline.
