Five Dead in Kano Building Collapses, Including Student

On Saturday, two separate building collapses in Kano State resulted in five fatalities and ten rescues. The first incident occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso, where a 50 by 50 feet building under construction collapsed, trapping six workers.

The Kano State Fire Service responded promptly, rescuing two workers alive, identified as 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar. Four other workers, identified as Sunusi Surajo (18), Bashir Ibrahim (20), Ibrahim Ibrahim (25), and Abubakar (30), were rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead.

They were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and handed over to Inspector Adamu Garba of the Kofar Wanbai Police Division. The second collapse occurred at Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya school in Kurna, Fagge, where eight of nine students were rescued.

The ninth victim, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was rescued unconscious but later confirmed dead. The victims were handed over to school headmaster Muhammad Gambo Usman.

The causes of both collapses are under investigation, and the Fire Service urged adherence to safety standards in construction.
