Nigerian Federal Universities Receive 40% Salary Increase in Budget Allocation

Nigerian federal universities have seen a substantial increase in budget allocations, with a 40% salary raise approved for academic staff. The Federal Government's 2026 budget estimates reveal a rise in personnel costs for the top 20 universities.

After a 16-year deadlock, an agreement was reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to improve welfare and industrial harmony. The agreement includes salary increases, the creation of a new professorial cadre, and enhanced remuneration packages.

The budget allocates N3.52 trillion to education, representing 6.1% of the national budget, with significant funds earmarked for educational interventions.
