Charly Boy: The Journey of Nigeria's Iconic Entertainer

Charly Boy, whose real name is Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, was born on June 19, 1950, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He comes from a notable family, with a father who served on Nigeria’s Supreme Court.

Despite this, he chose a non-traditional path, often describing his relationship with his father as complicated due to his desire for independence in career choices. Before entering the entertainment industry, Charly Boy spent a year in the seminary but ultimately decided to pursue music.

After completing his education and national service, he rejected a job offer from an oil company, opting instead to become a musician. In the late 1980s, he collaborated with stylist and singer-songwriter Tina Onwudiwe, known as African Oyinbo, to create his iconic punk-rock image characterized by leather clothing, mohawks, and motorcycles, which distinguished him from other Nigerian pop stars of that era.
