AAC Rejects DSS Suspension of Sowore's Case Ahead of 2027

The African Action Congress (AAC) has publicly rejected the reported suspension of the prosecution against its 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, by the Department of State Services (DSS). In a statement issued by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Rex Elanu, on Sunday, the AAC called for the immediate discontinuation of the case.

This demand follows reports that the DSS had ordered its private counsel, Akinolu Kehinde, SAN, to suspend the alleged cyberbullying case against Sowore until after the upcoming presidential election. The decision to suspend the case was reportedly made during a meeting involving the DSS Director-General, Tosin Ajayi, and senior officials from the agency's legal directorate.

The AAC criticized the suspension, stating that Nigerian criminal procedure does not allow for the indefinite suspension of a criminal trial, asserting that the appropriate action would be to discontinue the prosecution entirely. The AAC views this suspension as an acknowledgment of the political burden the case has become for the DSS and the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
