FDA Supports DSS Suspension of Sowore's Prosecution

The Foundation for Democracy in Africa (FDA) has expressed approval of the Department of State Services (DSS) decision, led by Director-General Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, to suspend the prosecution of Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), until after the 2027 presidential election. The FDA characterized this decision as a commitment to democracy, due process, and the integrity of the electoral process.

In a statement signed on Tuesday by Secretary Comrade Daniel Elachi Omaga and Co-convener Comrade Isah Abubakar, the FDA argued that no presidential candidate should face procedural disadvantages due to pending criminal cases during an election period. They noted that the decision aligns with regional and international democratic principles.

The FDA commended Ajayi for his commitment to due process since taking office in August 2024, including the release of wrongfully detained individuals and reliance on judicial processes. They clarified that the suspension does not exempt Sowore from legal accountability and that prosecution could resume post-election.
