Oyo Appeals to NUT to End School Shutdown Amid Crisis

The Oyo State Executive Council has made an appeal to the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) to allow students to return to school after a shutdown prompted by the abduction of 46 individuals, including 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers, in Oriir Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. The attack resulted in the death of teacher Joel Adesiyan and the beheading of mathematics teacher Michael Oyedokun, with a video of the latter's execution circulating online.

The NUT has directed teachers in public schools to refrain from classroom activities until adequate security measures are implemented. Olukayod Salami, representing the NUT, expressed concerns over the safety of teachers and students.

The Oyo State government has committed to enhancing security and has announced a budget of N23,012,000,000 for procuring teaching materials. The council also approved a budget increase for 2026 to address ongoing projects and economic recovery efforts.
