Abia Assembly Acts to Curb Noise Pollution for Health

The Abia State House of Assembly has taken decisive action to combat noise pollution, which threatens the health of residents. A motion sponsored by Ucheony Stephen Akachukwu, representing Aba Central, urged the state government to enforce existing noise control laws.

The motion highlights the dangers of noise pollution and calls for the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) and relevant agencies to regulate noise levels in residential areas, ensuring they do not exceed 55 decibels between 6 AM and 10 PM. Additionally, the motion advocates for a public awareness campaign to educate citizens on noise control and the importance of using soundproof equipment to limit loud outdoor speakers.

The lawmakers also urged the state government to designate specific areas for open-air loudspeaker activities, balancing citizens' rights to worship with the residents' right to peace. Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa confirmed that the House would work with local government chairmen to enforce these laws effectively.
