Abia State to Mandate Waste Bins in Commercial Vehicles

The Abia State Government has announced the enforcement of a policy requiring the mandatory use of waste bins in commercial vehicles, effective April 1, 2026. This initiative aims to promote proper waste disposal and strengthen the sanitation framework within the state.

Okei Kanu, the Abia State Commissioner for Environment, disclosed this information during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia following a meeting of the State Executive Council presided over by Governor Alex Otti. The government is committed to maintaining high hygiene standards among citizens, especially as Abia State has been noted for its poor sanitation, previously ranking as one of the dirtiest states in Nigeria.

The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has also confirmed the establishment of standards for hotels and water factories across the state to address environmental offenses. Additionally, the government has successfully reclaimed gullies in flood-prone areas, including Amaiyi, Amaogudu, Iyalu, Iberenta, and Elugwu Nkata.
