Abia State Mandates Waste Bins for Commercial Vehicles

The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is implementing a new policy mandating that all commercial vehicles, including buses, tricycles, and trucks, must be fitted with waste bins. This initiative was discussed during an interactive session with transport union leaders and stakeholders on Tuesday.

Mazi Ogbonnia Okerek, the Director General of ASEPA, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to environmental cleanliness, which is a priority for Governor Alex Otti's administration. The policy aims to improve sanitation and promote a healthier environment, contributing to Abia's reputation as one of Nigeria's cleanest states.

The enforcement will involve installing larger waste bins at motor parks to support effective waste disposal. Drivers are expected to dispose of waste properly, and the agency will collaborate with transport unions to ensure compliance.

Non-compliance will result in a zero-tolerance approach, with vehicles found operating without functional waste bins subject to impoundment and a fine of 50,000 Naira.
