Abia State Government Enhances Water and Sanitation Access

The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services. Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, made this statement during a two-day Stakeholders’ Validation and Local Investment Plan workshop organized by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation in collaboration with the state Ministry of Power and Public Utilities and Teamwork Global Associates in Umuahia.

The workshop, which concluded on Friday, aimed to develop a comprehensive Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene Investment Plan for the state. Represented by Nwaomiko Udo-Nwokocha, the commissioner emphasized the importance of sustainable infrastructure over temporary fixes.

Uzo Kalu, General Manager of the Rural Water and Sanitation Agency, noted that the workshop validated data from a statewide needs assessment across 17 local government areas. WASH expert Ishaku Ziyok, represented by Bamidele Igboro, stated that the exercise would help ensure the investment plan reflects actual conditions.

Local government leaders expressed optimism that the validated report would support Governor Alex Otti’s administration in enhancing water and sanitation services.
