Kingibe Blames Abuja Flooding on Construction Practices

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stated that the increasing flooding in Abuja is linked to construction activities on green areas, floodplains, and natural drainage channels. During an interview on AriseTV Primetime, she highlighted that many natural waterways have been obstructed, limiting rainwater flow.

Kingibe has contacted the Development Control Department, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to identify affected areas and propose solutions. She noted specific locations, including Maitama, Wuse Zone six, Asokoro, Mabushi, and Jabi Park, where construction has encroached on drainage corridors.

Kingibe criticized the poor road construction and drainage practices, asserting that roads in various areas have faced drainage issues after resurfacing. While acknowledging that the encroachment began under previous administrations, she accused the current administration of worsening the situation by permitting further development on protected areas.

Kingibe emphasized that Abuja's original master plan aimed to preserve essential green areas and flood channels for environmental sustainability.
