NIHSA Calls for Action Against Abuja Flooding Crisis

The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has initiated a technical assessment of areas impacted by recent flooding in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This assessment, led by Director General/Chief Executive Officer Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, aims to evaluate the extent of flooding, its effects on communities and infrastructure, and the factors contributing to the rapid accumulation of floodwater.

The assessment team visited Efab Estate in Lokogoma, where residents shared their experiences of the flood's devastating impact. They also examined a significant water channel linked to the Lugbe axis, along with damaged bridges and structures that hinder stormwater movement.

Umar Ibrahim Mohammed advised the estate management to formally communicate with NIHSA regarding their challenges and concerns about flooding. He emphasized the need for enforcing planning regulations to prevent developments that obstruct national drainage routes and floodplains.

Additionally, he called for enhanced collaboration among federal authorities, urban planners, emergency management agencies, communities, and other stakeholders to proactively address flood risks.
