Tinubu Urges Accountants to Measure Public Spending Outcomes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, addressed the 31st Annual National Conference of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) in Abuja. The conference's theme was “Redefining the Accountant’s Role in Governance, Reform and National Development.” Tinubu emphasized that accountants should shift their focus from merely tracking government expenditures to evaluating the results achieved from those expenditures.

He stated, “The question is no longer how much was spent. We must increasingly ask what was achieved with what was spent.” This shift is deemed necessary as Nigeria implements reforms in public finance and budgeting.

Dr. Rakiya Opemi Yusuf, representing the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, echoed this sentiment, urging accountants to proactively prevent risks rather than just reporting past actions. Chief Hajia Zuwairat Talatu Kishimi, President and Chairman of the Council of ANAN, added that accountability should begin before resources are committed, addressing the accountability gap between resources and results.
