NiMet Urges Emergency Response for Flash Flood Risks

On September 9, 2023, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a directive for states vulnerable to flash flooding to activate their emergency response systems immediately. This warning comes as NiMet forecasts widespread thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds across Nigeria from September 9 to 11, 2023.

The agency specifically identified Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River as states with a high likelihood of experiencing flash floods during this period. NiMet's three-day weather outlook indicates that persistent rainfall could lead to flash floods in parts of the South-East and South-South regions.

Additionally, thunderstorms are expected to affect northern, North-Central, and southern states at various times throughout the day. The forecast includes morning thunderstorms and light rainfall in the North-Central region, with moderate rainfall expected later.

Southern Nigeria will see cloudy conditions with morning rainfall across several states, followed by widespread moderate rainfall later in the day.
