Emomotimi Guwor Leads Consultation on Constitution Amendments

Emomotimi Guwor, the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, announced that state Houses of Assembly will consult with governors before finalizing positions on the Constitution amendment bills transmitted to them. This consultation aims to harmonize views on the amendments, including the State Police Bill.

Guwor stated that his colleagues are awaiting formal copies of the resolutions for thorough legislative scrutiny. He emphasized the importance of careful consideration of the state police proposal due to its governance implications.

The National Assembly, led by Clerk Kamoru Ogunlana, transmitted the 2026 Constitution alteration bill to the 36 state Houses of Assembly, requesting their resolutions within 30 days. This marks the beginning of a critical phase in the constitutional amendment process, as state legislatures' approval is constitutionally required for the amendments to proceed.
