Adamawa Governor Fintiri Bans Illegal Mining Amid Crisis

On Tuesday, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State announced an immediate ban on illegal mining activities in the Lamurade region. This decision was made following a review of a preliminary report by a media committee tasked with resolving prolonged crises between the Bachama and Chobo communities.

Fintiri emphasized that anyone found violating this ban and inciting violence will face strong government action, as the administration will not tolerate activities undermining peace and security in Adamawa. The committee, chaired by Dr.

Robert David Tankawa, conducted extensive consultations from June 17 to June 27 to identify issues contributing to the conflict, including land ownership disputes and competition for natural resources. The committee found no direct evidence linking individuals to violence but noted that youth were the main perpetrators, with community elders contributing to the ongoing conflict.

Recommendations included gradual relaxation of curfews, disarmament of armed groups, and reconciliation efforts among affected communities.
