ADC Criticizes Akpabio Over Electoral Act 2026 Comments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly condemned Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his remarks regarding the Electoral Act 2026, asserting that his comments undermine Nigeria's ethical democratic standards. Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC's national publicity secretary, stated that the provisions of the law are designed to protect dishonesty and weaken opposition parties, ultimately eroding public confidence in Nigeria's democracy.

Akpabio made his comments during an event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he dismissed opposition complaints about the Electoral Act. He insisted that the law was correctly passed and that opposition parties were merely confused about their registration status.

The ADC criticized the removal of certification for forgery as a valid ground for challenging election results, arguing that it contradicts constitutional provisions and sends a damaging message to Nigerian youth. The ADC emphasized that the amendments appear to be designed to protect dishonest practices rather than strengthen democracy.
