ADC Challenges Ikwerre LG Chairman Over Gathering Ban

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State is engaged in a dispute with Charles Wobodo, the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, regarding a recent ban on public gatherings. Wobodo announced this ban due to alleged security threats from unidentified individuals, citing rising incidents of killings, kidnappings, and attacks in the area.

The ADC, represented by spokesperson Chizi Enyi, condemned the directive as unconstitutional, asserting it is intended to intimidate political opponents in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. Enyi emphasized that the rights to peaceful assembly and political participation are constitutionally guaranteed and cannot be subject to the approval of a local government chairman.

The ADC expressed concern that this directive could set a precedent for similar restrictions in other local government areas, further shrinking democratic space in Rivers State. The party called for the immediate withdrawal of what it termed an unconstitutional directive.
