ADC Condemns Intimidation of Opposition in Rivers State

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rivers State Chapter, has raised concerns over alleged intimidation of opposition political parties in the state, particularly in light of a recent ban on gatherings in Ikwerre local government area. Barr Chizy Enyi, ADC's publicity secretary, stated that while the party acknowledges genuine security challenges, the ban appears to target opposition parties and raises constitutional issues regarding the rights to peaceful assembly and political participation as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The ADC reported ongoing intimidation and disruption of their political meetings in Ikwerre LGA over several months. They warned that if the ban remains, it could set a precedent for similar restrictions in other areas, threatening democratic engagement ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The ADC urged Hon. Charles Wobodo, Chairman of Ikwerre LGA, to retract the directive and called on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and security agencies to ensure equal protection for all political parties.

The party remains committed to lawful political engagement.
