ADC Criticizes Tinubu Over Ambassadorial Appointments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration for its announcement of 65 ambassadorial postings, which they describe as a diplomatic blunder that embarrasses Nigeria and reflects the government's incompetence in handling international relations. In a statement released on Friday by ADC National Public Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party highlighted that the ambassadorial posts publicly obtained require the agreement of the host country, as mandated by the Vienna Convention.

The ADC questioned why the government has remained silent on the 44 missions that have lacked envoys for nearly three years. They emphasized that the announcement of the 65 career and non-career ambassadors was made without proper diplomatic protocol, particularly regarding Article 4 of the Vienna Convention, which necessitates obtaining consent from the host country before appointing heads of mission.

The ADC expressed concern over the government's repeated failures in diplomatic appointments, citing past mistakes with postings to the UK, the United States, and France. They warned that Nigeria's diplomatic presence is diminishing amid global uncertainties, with 44 missions remaining vacant indefinitely.
