Peace Accord Signed Ahead of Osun Governorship Election

On July 25, 2023, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, representing the Peoples Democratic Party, and Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, along with other gubernatorial candidates, signed a peace accord to promote a peaceful electoral process ahead of the August 15 governorship election. The signing ceremony, which took place less than three weeks before the election, included representatives from 14 political parties, with some candidates attending in person and others sending representatives.

Notable attendees included the Convener of the National Peace Committee, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, represented by AIG Fasuba Olabode. Cardinal John Onaiyekan urged all stakeholders to respect the peace accord, emphasizing the importance of peaceful elections for democracy.

The police assured adequate security arrangements were in place, with personnel already arriving in Osun State for election duties.
