Osun State Gubernatorial Election: Violence and Relief

The gubernatorial election in Osun State on August 15, 2026, was a critical event, serving as a major test for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. The lead-up to the election was fraught with violence, with reports of over 70 election-related incidents resulting in approximately 30 deaths.

The ruling Accord Party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its local leaders, including former Governor Gboyega Oyetola and former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, of using federal power to intimidate their supporters. The situation escalated to the point where the Accord Party petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to redeploy the State Commissioner of Police, alleging bias.
