Adepoju Questions Osimhen's Captaincy for Super Eagles

Mutiu Adepoju, a former midfielder for the Super Eagles, has expressed doubts about Victor Osimhen's leadership qualities necessary to captain Nigeria's national football team. This comes after the departure of long-serving leaders William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa from international football.

Head coach Eric Cheyney is tasked with appointing a new permanent captain, with Osimhen being a natural choice due to his status as Nigeria's biggest star. However, Adepoju insists that leadership requires more than just football ability, highlighting the importance of emotional control and the capacity to represent the team off the pitch.

He referenced a past incident involving Osimhen and teammate Ademola Lookman during the 2025 AFCON, suggesting that Osimhen still has room to grow as a leader. Despite these reservations, Osimhen's impact on the national team is significant, having scored 35 goals in 46 appearances since his debut in June 2017, making him Nigeria's second-highest goalscorer.
