CAF Considers Cancelling 2027 AFCON Due to Infrastructure Concerns

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is contemplating canceling the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) amid doubts about the readiness of Tanzania and Uganda to co-host the event. The proposal to scrap the 2027 tournament and potentially postpone it to 2028 is being discussed within CAF's executive committee.

The concerns stem from worries about infrastructure, including stadium readiness, training facilities, transport networks, and accommodation. The recent experience during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda has amplified these concerns.

CAF is facing challenges in finding space in the international football calendar for qualifying matches without overloading players and clubs. The decision to cancel the 2028 AFCON could pave the way for the introduction of the proposed African Nations League in 2029.

The final decision is pending an executive committee meeting. Morocco has also notified CAF of its inability to host the WAFCON 14th edition scheduled for March-April 2026.
