AFN's Okowa Aims for Seven Golds at Glasgow Games

Chief Tonobok Okowa, the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), expressed satisfaction with the strength of Nigeria’s athletics squad as they prepare for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which commenced on July 27 and will run until August 1 at Scotstoun Stadium. Okowa reaffirmed the federation's target of winning seven gold medals.

He noted the participation of prominent athletes, including Tobi Amusan, Kanyinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, Samuel Ogazi, Rosemary Chukwuma, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and Chinecherem Nnamdi, which has strengthened the federation's medal ambitions. Okowa highlighted the positive spirit in the camp, which also includes U.S.-based athletes such as Alaba Akintola and Jami Schlueter, who is competing for Nigeria for the first time after switching from England.

The AFN's technical director, Gabriel Okon, reported an excellent mood among athletes as they prepared for over twenty events, including sprints and relays. Okowa, who is also the senior vice president of the Confederation of African Athletics, arrived in Glasgow ahead of the opening ceremony.
