Team Nigeria Aims for Seven Gold Medals at Commonwealth Games

The track and field events of the 2026 Commonwealth Games commenced today at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, with Team Nigeria projecting the possibility of winning seven gold medals. Former hurdler Moses Oyiki expressed confidence in this target, citing the presence of world-class athletes such as Kanyisola Ajayi and Samuel Ogazi.

The men's and women's 100m heats will begin the campaign for Team Nigeria, although Ajayi and Rosemary Chukwuma will not compete in the initial heats due to a new rule allowing them to advance directly to the next round. Favour Ashe and Adekalu Fakorede are set to participate in the men's 100m heats, while teenage athlete Miracle Ezechukwu will compete in the women's 100m.

Oyesade Olatoye is scheduled for the women's Hammer Throw Qualifying Round. Oyiki noted the need for the team to improve baton exchanges in relay events to avoid past mistakes that cost Nigeria medals.
