AFN VP Introduces N1.6m Reward for Commonwealth Trials

Akuchukwu Aghazu, the second vice president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, introduced a performance-based reward scheme aimed at motivating home-based athletes in preparation for the Commonwealth Games trials set to take place in Lagos from June 20 to 22. The initiative, named the Ben Aghazu Prize, honors the late father of Aghazu and will cover events including men's and women's 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m, 5000m, long jump, and javelin.

Athletes achieving predetermined performance standards in 14 events will receive N100,000. Additionally, outstanding coaches will be recognized with awards.

Tonobok Okowa, the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, welcomed this initiative, describing it as a commendable gesture to inspire athletes to elevate their performance levels during the crucial trials. The qualifying standards for various events have been set, including times for the 100m and 200m races and distances for field events.
