Africa Stablecoin Network Backs CBN's Payment Overhaul

The Africa Stablecoin Network has expressed its support for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and its Governor Olayemi Cardoso's call to modernize the country's cross-border payment system. During a meeting of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four Technical Group, Cardoso highlighted the slow and costly nature of current cross-border payments, particularly affecting developing economies.

The network, represented by Nathaniel Luz, emphasized that stablecoins could address real economic constraints and improve transaction efficiency, reducing remittance costs significantly. The CBN's vision for a faster and cheaper payment system aligns with the network's objectives, advocating for a harmonized regulatory framework to unlock the benefits of stablecoins.

Dr. Emomotimi Agama, Director General of the Nigeria Stablecoin Summit, noted the importance of a clear regulatory environment to enhance transparency and formalize economic activities.

The network called for collaboration among regulatory bodies to ensure innovation does not outpace oversight, aiming to address concerns regarding currency substitution and financial stability.
