African Chiefs Endorse Nigeria's Prison Reforms as Model

Delegates from 11 African countries, led by Mr. Sabila Sawadogo, Deputy Chairman of the African Correctional Services Association's West African region, commended Nigeria's prison reforms during a conference in Abuja.

They described Nigeria's technology-driven custodial system and inmate rehabilitation initiatives as a benchmark for modern correctional practices in Africa. The delegation inspected the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, which has undergone significant upgrades, including biometric registration and vocational training programs.

Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, and NCO Sylvest Ndidi Nwakuch, the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, were recognized for their leadership in transforming Nigeria's custodial centers.

The reforms, part of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, emphasize rehabilitation over punishment and align with international standards. The Kuje facility is increasingly seen as a flagship model despite security challenges, particularly following a 2022 terrorist attack.
