Rema Advocates for Creative Evolution in Afrobeats

Rema, a prominent Nigerian Afrobeats artist, has called for a creative evolution among musicians in the genre, stating that sticking too closely to what fans like could impede progress. During a performance at his concert, he expressed that artists should prioritize their creativity over audience expectations.

Rema, who refers to himself as the ‘Prince of Afrobeats’, asserted that if artists continue to focus solely on pleasing their fans, the genre will struggle to advance. He stated, “I don’t care what you say about me.

I don’t care if you like what I like. But I make music that I like before you like it.” His remarks come in light of ongoing discussions on social media regarding the direction of Afrobeats, particularly the criticism faced by artists who blend the genre with other musical styles to appeal to international audiences.
