Obasanjo Regrets Choosing Atiku as Vice President

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo stated that selecting Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election was the greatest mistake of his presidency. This remark was made during a fireside chat with Charles Oputa, also known as Charly Boy, in Lagos.

Obasanjo reiterated that he would not have chosen Atiku if he had known him better at the time. This is not the first time Obasanjo has criticized Atiku; he previously mentioned this sentiment in June 2022.

Atiku, who is currently the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 elections, responded by asserting that his commitment to Nigeria and democracy remains unchanged, despite Obasanjo's bitterness. He emphasized his constitutional stance against the third-term agenda and his significant contributions to Obasanjo's political journey.

The two have also been involved in a dispute regarding allegations of bribery related to the removal of a former Speaker of the House of Representatives before the 2003 elections.
