Atiku Abubakar Responds to Obasanjo's Regretful Remarks

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo's comments regarding his selection as vice president in 1999. Obasanjo described this choice as his "biggest regret," claiming he only recognized Atiku's true character after they took office.

During a fireside chat in Lagos, Obasanjo expressed gratitude that Atiku's actions did not detract from his focus on Nigeria. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku expressed sadness over Obasanjo's remarks, arguing they were an attempt to rewrite history.

He stated he was proud to have opposed Obasanjo's alleged third-term bid, asserting that he prioritized Nigeria's Constitution over personal loyalty. Atiku emphasized that resisting the third-term agenda was about protecting democracy, claiming that the Nigerian people ultimately won that battle.

He also referenced praise from Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala regarding the economic management team under Obasanjo's administration.
