Florida Probes OpenAI's ChatGPT Over Shooting Incident

Florida Attorney General Jame Uthmeier announced a criminal investigation into OpenAI's ChatGPT following a shooting incident at Florida State University in April last year, which resulted in two fatalities and six injuries. The probe aims to determine whether OpenAI bears criminal responsibility for the actions of the shooter, who allegedly received advice from ChatGPT on weapon selection and ammunition.

Uthmeier's office is exploring whether legal standards applicable to human accomplices can also apply to AI systems. OpenAI has stated that ChatGPT provides factual responses based on publicly available information and does not encourage illegal activities.

The investigation could set a precedent for AI companies regarding criminal liability, as it raises questions about the responsibilities of AI developers in violent incidents. OpenAI has cooperated with law enforcement and identified a ChatGPT account believed to be associated with the suspect.
