Akwa Ibom Pays N90bn Gratuities, Recruits 7,069 Workers

The Akwa Ibom State Government has disbursed over N90 billion of the N111 billion in inherited gratuity liabilities owed to retired public servants, as announced by the Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Elsie Peters, during a media event in Uyo. This payment is part of Governor Umo Eno's administration's initiatives to enhance workers' welfare and strengthen public service.

Peters noted that the administration has also ensured regular salary payments, introduced an N80,000 minimum wage effective November 1, 2024, and sustained the 13th-month salary, termed “Eno-Mber,” which provides additional financial support during festive periods. Furthermore, approximately 7,069 personnel have been recruited, including 4,000 general workers, 1,000 primary school teachers, and 766 health workers, addressing critical staffing needs and improving service delivery.

Additionally, 150 two-bedroom expandable houses were allocated to civil servants through a raffle, and a health insurance scheme for civil servants was launched, with premiums covered by the government for junior workers.
