Nigerian Airlines Demand Fair Fuel Pricing, Reject Subsidies

Airline operators in Nigeria, represented by spokesperson Obiora Okonkwo, have rejected the notion of government subsidies and are instead calling for fair pricing of aviation fuel. During an interview, Okonkwo highlighted the rising and inconsistent prices of aviation fuel, which he described as a critical driver of economic activity.

He emphasized that the aviation sector plays a central role in commercial mobility across the country and is not solely for the business elite. Okonkwo compared the current challenges in the aviation sector to the minimal support received during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that the government allocated only N4 billion, which was insufficient for the entire aviation ecosystem.

He warned that the volatility of aviation fuel prices poses a serious threat to the industry's survival, leading to potential job losses and financial strain on banks. Okonkwo called for stronger regulatory oversight in the fuel market and indicated that airline operators would take action, including blacklisting suppliers who do not adhere to fair pricing.
