Ondo State Launches Free Health Insurance for Pensioners

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State announced the formal enrollment of retired civil servants into a free health insurance scheme, fully funded by the state government. This initiative aims to address the growing healthcare needs of pensioners amid rising medical costs associated with aging.

Aiyedatiwa made this announcement at the maiden National Summit on Social Health Insurance, held at the International Cultural Event Centre in Akure. The summit focused on the theme of economic realities and universal health coverage.

The governor emphasized that the scheme would allow retirees to access medical consultations and specialist services without financial burdens, ensuring unrestricted access to essential treatments. He also mentioned a commitment to invest in healthcare infrastructure, including a N1 billion hospital intervention fund to modernize facilities across the state.

The summit was attended by policymakers and health insurance managers, who discussed strategies for achieving universal health coverage in the current economic climate.
