Akpabio Urges Unity Against Kidnapping and Terrorism

Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Nigerian Senate, cautioned against political exploitation of Nigeria's security challenges, stating that kidnappers and terrorists are targeting the nation and its people, not political parties. He made these remarks during a Senate plenary session following a recess for the Sallah holiday.

Akpabio highlighted the urgent need for national unity and coordinated action to confront insecurity, particularly in light of recent violent crimes, including the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, which resulted in the tragic loss of lives. He expressed condolences for the victims, including teachers Michael Oyedokun and Adesiyan Adegboy, and underscored the importance of protecting vulnerable communities.

Akpabio urged lawmakers to resist the temptation to politicize tragedies and called for the establishment of a national security summit to review existing strategies and strengthen the country’s security framework. He expressed confidence in Nigeria's resilience and the capacity of its institutions to overcome security challenges.
