Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed a petition with the Department of State Services requesting an investigation into a statement falsely attributed to him that circulated across social media platforms this week. According to a statement released by his media office on Wednesday, Akpabio denies making the remarks and characterizes the content as deliberately inflammatory and designed to inflame regional tensions.

The petition, submitted through Akpabio's Chief of Staff Chinedu Akubueze, names Facebook and other digital platforms as channels through which the disputed statement was distributed. The Senate President's office described the material as deliberately crafted to be divisive and requested the security agency conduct an urgent inquiry into both how the statement originated and the mechanisms behind its spread across social media.

Akpabio's media aide Jackson Udom made copies of the petition available to journalists in Abuja, ensuring public awareness of the action taken. The Senate President's office framed the investigation request as a matter of national security interest, given the potential for such misinformation to deepen political and regional divisions within the country.

One of the sources noted that Akpabio's petition referenced concerns about timing, noting that such divisive messaging could fuel tensions ahead of the 2027 general election cycle.
