Akume Calls for Tolerance Ahead of 2027 Elections

On Wednesday, George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, called on religious and traditional leaders across Nigeria to deepen tolerance and strengthen grassroots mobilization in preparation for the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the first triannual meeting of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) held at Rockview Hotel in Abuja, Akume emphasized the importance of fostering understanding among citizens to prevent manipulation that could trigger violence during the elections.

He highlighted the moral responsibility of religious and traditional leaders to collaborate with youth in promoting peace and coexistence. Akume warned that Nigeria faces serious challenges, including misinformation and insecurity, which can fuel division and violence.

He stressed the need for religious literacy alongside media information literacy to combat hate speech and misinformation. Akume also raised concerns about insecurity in the education sector, urging the government to ensure safe learning environments for children to promote uninterrupted education.
