Alaibe Calls for Economic Shift in Niger Delta at Summit

Chief Ndutimi Alaibe, the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), stated that the Niger Delta must move beyond over six decades of dependence on raw material extraction. Speaking as the lead speaker at the 2026 Niger Delta Economic and Investment Summit organized by the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Alaibe emphasized the need for a new development strategy focused on accountability, economic integration, and indigenous enterprise.

He pointed out that despite the region's significant contribution to Nigeria's oil economy, many communities still lack basic infrastructure, healthcare, education, and potable water. Alaibe argued that the region should reclaim its historical trading culture and develop productive industries capable of competing globally.

He highlighted the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for Niger Delta businesses, stressing the importance of competitive logistics and infrastructure to capitalize on this opportunity.
