APC Crisis in Benue State Threatens 2027 Elections

The ongoing political crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, primarily between Governor Hyacinth Alia and former Governor George Akume, is jeopardizing the re-election prospects of federal lawmakers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The APC remains sharply divided due to a power struggle, with 14 federal lawmakers, including three senators and 11 House of Representatives members, having been elected on the APC platform during the 2023 general elections.

The party currently controls 10 seats in the House of Representatives and two Senate positions. The internal divisions have intensified, with lawmakers increasingly aligning with either Alia or Akume.

Despite attempts by Vice President Kashim Shettima and House Speaker Tajudeen Abba to mediate, efforts to reconcile the factions have stalled. The rivalry has led to political realignments among lawmakers, with Bless Onuh exploring options to retain her seat.
