MDCN Suspends Doctors Over Chimamanda's Son's Death

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has suspended three doctors, including Dr. Tund Majekodunmi, the medical director of Euracar Multi Specialist Hospital, and anesthesiologist Dr.

Titu Ogundar, following an investigation into the tragic death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie Eseg, son of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband Ivara Eseg. The incident occurred on January 7, 2026, when Nkanu was taken to Euracar Hospital in Lagos for treatment after initially developing what was thought to be a common cold.

During the procedure, Nkanu was sedated and reportedly not properly monitored, leading to complications including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest. The panel found prima facie evidence of professional misconduct against ten other doctors, while eight were cleared of wrongdoing.

The suspended doctors will remain barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria until the case is resolved, with the disciplinary tribunal set to review the matter further.
