Amaechi and Oji Shine in US Outdoor Season Opens

Nigerian throwers Obiageri Amaechi and Jessica Oji made a strong start to the outdoor season during invitational meets in the United States on Saturday and Sunday. Amaechi delivered her season's best throw of 61.79m in the women's discus B final in Oklahoma, improving significantly from her previous mark of 58.43m recorded just a day earlier. She finished fifth in the B final, with American thrower Jayden Ulrich winning the event with a mark of 65.39m. This performance builds on her momentum following a silver medal win in the women's discus at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games, where she threw 56.99m. Meanwhile, Oji continued her rapid rise in the women's shot put at the Spec Town Invitational in Georgia, registering a throw of 18.10m to finish second, trailing Jamaica's Danniel Thoma Dodd, who won with 19.34m. Oji, an 18-year-old, had previously set a Nigerian U-20 record of 17.74m at the Tiger Paw Invitational in February and has switched allegiance to compete for the United States at the University of Pennsylvania.
