Ogun State Issues Flood Alert for 11 Communities

The Ogun State government, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, has issued a flood warning for 11 communities in anticipation of heavy rainfall expected to begin in September 2026. The warning was communicated by the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, following the Nigeria Meteorological Agency's (NiMet) Seasonal Climate Prediction, which forecasts an average rainfall of approximately 360mm for the month.

Oresanya noted that the first phase of the rainy season, from mid-March to July, resulted in heavy downpours and isolated flash floods, but effective drainage maintenance helped mitigate damage. The Commissioner specifically warned residents of Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute, Warewa, and parts of Abeokuta, as well as coastal communities like Makun-Omi and Iwopin, to stay alert and consider relocating if necessary.

He also advised fish farmers in flood-prone areas to harvest their stocks promptly. The state government will collaborate with NiMet and other agencies to monitor weather conditions and maintain drainage systems.
