Amnesty International Urges Rescue of Abducted Kwara Residents

Amnesty International has demanded the immediate rescue of residents abducted during a coordinated attack in Yashikira, Baruten Local Government Area, Kwara State, which occurred on May 25, 2026. The attack involved gunmen who reportedly burned part of the emir's palace and abducted ten people, including members of the traditional ruler's household.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed that the attack took place around 2:00 AM and described it as a coordinated operation. The police successfully repelled the attack on their station and launched a full-scale tactical operation involving military and security agencies to rescue the victims.

Amnesty International condemned the attack, warning that it reflects a worsening insecurity situation in northern Nigeria and called for urgent government intervention to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further incidents. The organization highlighted that the attack is part of a disturbing pattern of violence in rural areas of Kwara State.
