INEC's Joash Amupitan Commits to Credible 2027 Elections

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reiterated the commission's dedication to conducting transparent, credible, and acceptable elections in 2027 during a panel session at the sixth edition of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, Imo State. He assured that there would be no predetermined results in the upcoming elections.

Since assuming office on October 23, 2025, Amupitan has consistently pledged to ensure that every vote counts. He highlighted security as a major concern, noting that insecurity in some states could disenfranchise voters.

INEC is collaborating with the police to develop strategies for conducting elections in volatile areas and warned that those involved in pre-election violence would face arrest and prosecution. Amupitan criticized the trend of personality-based politics and urged political parties to focus on issues.

He also mentioned that ongoing litigations from political party primaries would not hinder the conduct of the 2027 elections and that INEC is enhancing its intelligence-gathering to combat electoral malpractice.
