Anambra Health Authorities Launch Emergency Lassa Fever Response

Anambra health authorities have activated an emergency response to a Lassa fever case, with the affected patient receiving treatment at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Ebonyi State. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, announced the measures during an emergency stakeholders’ meeting in Awka.
The state is intensifying surveillance, initiating contact-tracing, and enhancing public awareness to mitigate further transmission risks. The Incident Management System has been activated to coordinate surveillance and case investigations.
Health officials will investigate the affected household in Omasi and monitor individuals who may have been exposed. Dr Obidike urged residents with persistent fever or malaria-like symptoms to seek medical attention promptly, warning against self-medication.
Lassa fever is endemic in Nigeria, primarily transmitted through contact with contaminated food or items. The State Epidemiologist, Dr Emembolu Chuma, advised on food storage and infection prevention measures.
The Ministry of Health called for cooperation from residents to report suspected cases and avoid spreading unverified information.
